In 2016 an attacker drained a large contract called The DAO, and Ethereum’s participants voted to fork the chain and undo it. Ethereum Classic is the continuation of the chain that did not — the ledger where those transactions still stand, on the principle that a chain which can be rewritten by agreement is not doing the one job it exists for.

It kept proof-of-work when Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake in 2022, so ETC is mined, with blocks roughly every thirteen seconds. It still runs the same virtual machine and the same account model.

Its security budget is a fraction of the chain it split from, and it has been reorganised by 51% attacks more than once. That is a real and specific risk, not a reputational one, and it is why a large ETC transfer is normally given more confirmations than the same value in ETH.

• Before you send. ETC and ETH addresses are identical in format and are not interchangeable. Sending one chain’s asset to the other’s address is the most common unrecoverable mistake here, and neither we nor the exchange can reverse it — confirm the wallet is on Ethereum Classic before you use its address.
• Set a refund address. Funds go back there automatically if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. Without one, a refund needs a message to support instead. See refund handling.

The usual way to buy Ethereum Classic is a centralized exchange: open an account, pass identity verification, link a bank account or a card, and pay in fiat currency. It works, and every step of it is recorded against your name — the purchase, the payment details and the address you withdraw to. If you already hold any other coin there is a shorter route: convert it into ETC here. What this site does not do is take a card or a bank transfer. There is no fiat on-ramp, by design, because the on-ramp is exactly the step that requires identity. Network fee

The fee for delivering coins to your wallet address is already inside the receive amount. The one cost outside the quote is the transaction fee your own wallet pays to send the ETC deposit.

Exchange rate

ETC exchange rates are compared in real time across several partners when you enter the amount, and re-priced server-side the moment you confirm, so the rate you see is the rate the order is created with.

Processing time

A swap out of ETC runs once your ETC transaction to the deposit address has the network confirmations the partner requires, and Ethereum Classic transactions settle in blocks that come every ~13 sec. How many it waits for depends on the amount and on network congestion, so the tracking page shows the live count.
