About Ethereum Classic
In 2016 an attacker drained a large contract called The DAO, and Ethereum’s participants voted to fork the chain and undo it. Ethereum Classic is the continuation of the chain that did not — the ledger where those transactions still stand, on the principle that a chain which can be rewritten by agreement is not doing the one job it exists for.
It kept proof-of-work when Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake in 2022, so ETC is mined, with blocks roughly every thirteen seconds. It still runs the same virtual machine and the same account model.
Its security budget is a fraction of the chain it split from, and it has been reorganised by 51% attacks more than once. That is a real and specific risk, not a reputational one, and it is why a large ETC transfer is normally given more confirmations than the same value in ETH.
Sending and receiving ETC
- Before you send. ETC and ETH addresses are identical in format and are not interchangeable. Sending one chain’s asset to the other’s address is the most common unrecoverable mistake here, and neither we nor the exchange can reverse it — confirm the wallet is on Ethereum Classic before you use its address.
- Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
