About Filecoin
Filecoin is a market for disk space. Storage providers pledge collateral, take on client data, and must keep proving they still hold it — cryptographically, on a schedule — to keep earning. Fail the proofs and the collateral is slashed, which is what makes the promise enforceable without anyone auditing a datacentre.
The chain advances in thirty-second epochs. FIL is what clients pay with, what providers pledge, and what the proofs are rewarded in.
Addresses come in several forms distinguished by their prefix — f1 and f3 for ordinary accounts, f4 for the Ethereum-compatible layer — and they are not interchangeable with any other network’s.
Sending and receiving FIL
- Before you send. Send to the Filecoin address your wallet gives you, prefix included. FIL’s Ethereum-compatible layer means a wallet can also show you a 0x address; that is not a substitute for the f-prefixed one unless the payout is explicitly on that layer.
- Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
- Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.
