About Decred

Decred runs a hybrid consensus: miners produce blocks, but ticket-holders who have locked DCR vote on whether each block stands. A block the stakeholders reject does not count. That single mechanism is the project — it means miners cannot impose a change the people holding the asset do not want, which is precisely the standoff that split Bitcoin in 2017 and Ethereum in 2016.

The same voting machinery decides protocol changes and funds development from a treasury built into the block subsidy, so upgrades are ratified on-chain rather than argued out in forums and settled by whoever forks first. It is the most complete attempt at on-chain governance among the older chains, and it has been running since 2016.

Blocks come about every five minutes and the ledger is fully transparent, as Bitcoin’s is.

Sending and receiving DCR

  • Before you send. A Decred address begins with `Ds` and is not interchangeable with a Bitcoin address despite the similar length and alphabet. Send to the address your Decred wallet gives you.
  • Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
  • Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.
