About Internet Computer
The Internet Computer is not one chain but many. Independent subnets each run their own consensus and hold their own canisters — the network’s name for a running program — with the Network Nervous System, an on-chain governance canister, deciding what the subnets do. Because the work is spread across subnets rather than a single chain, there is no one block interval that describes the network.
Its distinguishing claim is that application code and its state live on the chain itself rather than on servers that talk to one, so a canister serves web requests directly. ICP the token pays for that computation, and is staked in the governance system to vote.
The ledger is public. Balances and transfers are as visible here as on any transparent chain.
Sending and receiving ICP
- Before you send. An ICP payout goes to a ledger account identifier — the 64-character hex string a wallet shows as its ICP address — not to a principal id, which is the other identifier wallets display and is written in dash-separated groups. They are not interchangeable.
- Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
- Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.

How do I swap ICP without an account?

Is there a minimum ICP amount?
Yes, and it moves with network conditions, so the widget shows the live figure for whichever pair you pick before you confirm. Minimums exist to keep on-chain costs a small fraction of the swap rather than swallowing it. There is no maximum.
