About Shiba Inu
SHIB is an ERC-20 token launched on Ethereum in 2020. It has no mechanism of its own: it is a balance in a standard token contract, so everything about how it moves — the twelve-second blocks, the gas paid in ETH, the permanence of the record — belongs to Ethereum rather than to SHIB.
That gas requirement is the practical catch. A wallet holding SHIB and no ETH holds something it cannot send, and topping up the ETH is a separate transfer that has to happen first.
The project later launched Shibarium, a layer-2 network of its own. Our liquidity partners quote the Ethereum token, not the Shibarium one, and the two are not the same balance.
Sending and receiving SHIB
- Before you send. SHIB settles here as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, so the payout needs an Ethereum address. Shibarium uses the same 0x address format, so an address from a wallet pointed at Shibarium will look perfectly valid and still be the wrong chain — check which network the wallet is on, not how the address looks.
- Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
- Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.
