Dogecoin began in 2013 as a joke: a Litecoin fork with a dog on it, released in a few days. Twelve years later it is still producing blocks every minute at fees of a fraction of a cent, which makes it one of the cheaper ways to move value between two places quickly.

It is merge-mined with Litecoin — the same proof-of-work secures both chains at once — so a network nobody set out to defend inherits the hash rate of one that people did. That arrangement is most of the reason the joke survived its own novelty.

There is no supply cap. A fixed number of DOGE is issued in every block, forever, so the percentage inflation falls toward zero while the supply itself never stops growing. That is a deliberate departure from Bitcoin’s 21 million, not an oversight. The ledger is Bitcoin’s in every other respect, which means every address, amount and transfer is permanent and public.
