About eCash

eCash is what became of Bitcoin Cash ABC after the 2020 split, rebranded in 2021. It is therefore a fork of a fork: Bitcoin to Bitcoin Cash in 2017, Bitcoin Cash to this in 2020, with all of the shared history that implies and none of the shared ledger since.

Its distinguishing work is an avalanche consensus layer running alongside proof-of-work, which lets transactions reach practical finality in seconds rather than waiting on blocks. The base chain still targets ten-minute blocks underneath.

It also redenominated. Where Bitcoin quotes prices in whole coins with eight decimal places, eCash moved the point so amounts are large numbers of small units — which is why a holding is millions of XEC and why the unit price looks the way it does. Check the figure carefully before sending.

Sending and receiving XEC

  • Before you send. eCash addresses are usually written with an `ecash:` prefix, and the part after it looks much like a Bitcoin Cash CashAddr — the two chains share an ancestor and an alphabet. Use the address your eCash wallet gives you; a Bitcoin Cash address is not a valid destination.
  • Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
  • Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.
