PIVX began as a Bitcoin-derived chain and moved to proof-of-stake, producing blocks about every minute at negligible cost. Its reason for existing is SHIELD, a zero-knowledge protocol derived from the same Sapling work behind Zcash, which lets a transaction hide sender, receiver and amount.

And that is where the honest caveat belongs: shielding is optional. It works cryptographically, and it protects you in proportion to how many other people use it — a shielded transaction on a mostly transparent chain is conspicuous precisely because it is unusual. This is the identical trade [Zcash](/coins/zcash) makes, and the opposite of [Monero](/coins/monero), where confidentiality is mandatory and the anonymity set is everyone.

Staking is native and does not require handing custody to anyone, which is unusual among proof-of-stake chains and is worth more than it is usually given credit for.

• Before you send. PIVX addresses begin with `D` and resemble several other Bitcoin-derived chains’ addresses. Confirm the wallet is on PIVX rather than judging by the shape, and note that a payout arrives transparent — moving it into the shielded pool afterwards is a step you take, not one the swap does.
• Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
• Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.
