About Hedera
Hedera does not produce blocks in the way most chains do. Its hashgraph consensus has nodes gossip transactions to each other and derive an agreed order from the gossip itself, which gives it finality in seconds without rounds of block production. Fees are fixed in dollar terms rather than floating with demand — unusual, and deliberate for the enterprises it courts.
Governance is the part worth understanding before holding it. The network is run by a council of large organisations that operate the nodes and vote on changes. That is a considered trade: predictable operation and a clear accountable party, against a validator set nobody can simply join. Whether that is a feature depends entirely on what you wanted from a public ledger.
The ledger is fully transparent. Every transfer and account balance is public, and Hedera’s consensus service exists precisely to make records auditable.
Sending and receiving HBAR
- Before you send. A Hedera account id looks like `0.0.1234567` rather than a long string, and a deposit to any exchange or custodial account also carries a memo — they share one account across all their users and the memo is what identifies you. Send the exact memo shown; a transfer without it lands in their general pool.
- Set a refund address. It is the only route funds have back to you if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. See refund handling.
- Nothing is held for you. Deposits are forwarded, not stored, and the data kept is the amount and the two addresses — purged once the swap finalizes. The full picture is on the privacy page.
