About Tether
USDT is a dollar-denominated token issued by Tether, redeemable one-for-one against reserves the issuer holds. The ERC-20 version lives on Ethereum, settles under Ethereum’s twelve-second blocks, and costs Ethereum gas to move — which can be dollars per transfer when the network is busy.
The same ticker exists on Ethereum, Tron, Solana and several other chains, and the versions are not interchangeable. Sending ERC-20 USDT to a Tron address, or vice versa, does not arrive and is not recoverable.
Every USDT balance is a claim on a centralised issuer, and that issuer can freeze specific addresses at any time. That is a different risk from price volatility, and it is the reason a dollar balance is not the same thing as a bearer asset. An Ethereum to Tether ERC-20 exchange keeps both legs on one chain, so the address that sends the ETH can receive the USDT.
Sending and receiving USDT
- Before you send. Match the network exactly. This is the Ethereum ERC-20 contract, so the receiving address must be an Ethereum address.
- Set a refund address. Funds go back there automatically if a swap cannot complete — a deposit below the minimum, or one arriving after the quote window closed. Without one, a refund needs a message to support instead. See refund handling.

Buy USDT ERC-20 without an account
The usual way to buy Tether is a centralized exchange: open an account, pass identity verification, link a bank account or a card, and pay in fiat currency. It works, and every step of it is recorded against your name — the purchase, the payment details and the address you withdraw to.
